5 Days Based in Auckland – See the North Island Without Packing Your Bags

Not everyone wants to live out of a suitcase. Unpack once, settle into Auckland, and let us take you out to the North Island's best each morning, then bring you home each night. Four day tours and one free day, all from the same bed.

Day 1: Auckland's Wild West Coast

Ease in with Auckland's rugged side. We cross the Harbour Bridge and head west through Kumeu to Hallertau Brewery for lunch (included, from a set menu). Then it's the black sand and crashing surf of Muriwai Beach, and the viewing platforms above the gannet colony. We finish on North Head in Devonport, with the option of a ferry ride back to the city.

Day 2: Rotorua Highlights

Geysers, mud pools and Māori culture in a single day. Every version includes Wai-O-Tapu's geothermal wonderland, a drive past Rotorua's city highlights and lunch from a set menu. You choose how to round it off:

Day 3: A Day in Auckland

Time off in the City of Sails. Ferry to Waiheke Island for vineyards, or to Devonport for a coffee and a volcano climb. Prefer to stay guided? Join our Auckland City Highlights tour for the best viewpoints and stories in half a day.

Day 4: Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves

Two icons, one day. Walk the Shire on a two-and-a-half-hour guided tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set, past the Party Tree and the Mill to the Green Dragon Inn. Stop at Lake Karapiro, enjoy lunch (included), then float beneath a galaxy of glowworms in the Waitomo Caves. It's every bit as magical as it sounds.

Day 5: The Coromandel

We finish on the coast. Our Coromandel day tours both visit Cathedral Cove, the famous rock arch. Which version runs on your day depends on the tide:

Not sure which to book? Hot Water Beach is only scheduled on days when the tide allows. If that tour shows as unavailable for your date, book the Coastal Adventure instead. We watch the tide tables so you don't have to.

Why Skip the Hire Car?

Basing yourself in Auckland without a car makes a lot of sense. A rental would spend most nights in a paid hotel car park, and every day trip would start with city traffic and motorways on the left-hand side of the road.

  • Door to door. Most of these tours include Auckland hotel pick-up and drop-off at select locations, so your day starts at the lobby.
  • Everyone enjoys the ride. No navigator, no driver, just views of the Waikato, the Coromandel coast and the West Coast surf.
  • We handle the planning. Tickets, lunch stops and timings are sorted, right down to tide times at Hot Water Beach.
  • Local guides, small groups. Get the stories behind each place, ask anything, and meet fellow travellers, with more flexibility than a big coach tour.
  • Mix and match. Because these are individual day tours, you choose which days to go and which to rest.

Thousands of travellers already trust us with Hobbiton, one of Tripadvisor's top experiences in the South Pacific. Five days in Auckland is more of the same: famously passionate guides, small groups and every detail taken care of.

Good to Know

  • One hotel, five nights. Choose a central Auckland base for easy pick-ups.
