3 Days in the North Island – Hobbiton, Glowworms & Geothermal Rotorua

Steam rising from a geyser in Rotorua's geothermal landscape

Short on time. Big on experience. Three days is all you need to tick off the North Island's headline acts: the Shire, a glowworm-lit cave, bubbling mud, and the biggest lake in the country. Two one-way tours do the travelling; the day in between is all yours.

Day 1: Auckland to Rotorua via Hobbiton & Waitomo

We head south through the green rolling farmland of the Waikato, via Otorohanga, the Kiwiana capital of New Zealand. First stop: Waitomo, where you walk through ancient limestone caves and glide by boat beneath a galaxy of glowworms. After saying hello to the friendly animals at Big Bird, it's on to the Hobbiton Movie Set for a guided tour of the Shire's 44 hobbit holes, finishing with a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn. A drive past Rotorua's lakefront and Government Gardens, and we drop you at your accommodation. Lunch isn't included, but we stop where you can buy some.

Evening tip: still buzzing? Wander the Redwoods Nightlights, a lantern-lit walk through the Whakarewarewa Forest canopy after dark.

Day 2: Free Day in Rotorua

Rotorua is a town that steams, bubbles and smells a little of sulphur (you'll stop noticing by lunchtime). Our favourite way to fill the day:

  • Morning: fly through native forest on Rotorua Canopy Tours' ziplines and swing bridges.
  • Afternoon: sink into Secret Spot Hot Tubs, cedar tubs filled with natural spring water, right by the forest's edge.
  • Evening: an evening cultural performance at Te Puia, where you'll be welcomed with Māori song and haka and see the Pōhutu Geyser at night.

Day 3: Rotorua to Auckland via Taupō & Hamilton Gardens

We start at Wai-O-Tapu to watch the Lady Knox Geyser erupt, then walk past Champagne Lake, the Devil's Bath and bubbling mud pools. Next it's Lake Taupō for lunch (own expense) and a short highlights tour, the roaring blue water of Huka Falls, and the 18 themed gardens of Hamilton Gardens on the way back to Auckland.

Why Let Us Drive?

On a three-day trip, every hour counts. Don't spend them navigating Auckland's motorways, unfamiliar country roads and driving on the left.

  • We've done the timings. Cave tours, Hobbiton entry and Wai-O-Tapu are all included and lined up, so you see the Lady Knox Geyser erupt instead of arriving just after.
  • Everyone sees the Waikato. Rolling green farmland is far nicer from the passenger seat.
  • No car needed. No rental, fuel, insurance or Rotorua parking to sort for a long weekend.
  • Small groups. Get to know your guide and fellow travellers, ask all the questions you like, and enjoy more flexibility than a big coach tour.

Our Hobbiton tours feature among the top experiences in the South Pacific on Tripadvisor, with thousands of five-star reviews between them. Trust us with Middle-earth, then trust us with the rest of the weekend.

Good to Know

  • Accommodation isn't included. Book two nights in Rotorua.
  • Pre-book your extras. Canopy tours, hot tubs and evening shows can fill up in summer.
  • Got more time? Stretch it out with our 5-day or 7-day North Island itineraries.
